Herts Geoconservation

Chalk extends throughout much of Hertfordshire providing much of the prominent relief of the Chiltern Hills. However, there are also important and unique examples of Tertiary (Hertfordshire Puddingstone) and Pleistocene sediments in the County, and evidence of glacial and periglacial environments. Ice and water have moulded the landscape which is also reflected in the locations designated as either Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites (RIGS) or Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

We take an active interest in conserving important geological sites in Hertfordshire and working parties are regularly organised to clean up and preserve these SSSIs and RIGS.

In this section you will find maps and lists of all the sites of geological interest in Hertfordshire, specifically Regionally Important Geological Sites (RIGs) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). HGS take a personal interest in a small number of these sites and you can find out what we have done and plan to do at these sites in this section too.

If you are interested in joining a working party undertaking conservation work, please contact us and you will be most welcome to join our friendly group of volunteers.

Finally, this section links you to more broader Geoconservation and Geodiversity activities, funding and Conservation in the UK.

Enjoy!
