Celebrating 50 Years with 50 Geological Sites

A book is in preparation to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Hertfordshire Geological Society on 9th January 2025.

It is a collection of 50 full-page illustrations that, taken together, tell the story of Hertfordshire’s geological past.

Most of the objects and locations shown are ones that readers can easily visit and, in the accompanying text, we’ve tried to be clear and understandable, with geological terminology kept to a minimum.

It is aimed to have the book available in early 2025 for under £10.

A brief history of the Society

The Society started 9th January 1975 as the Geological Section of the Hertfordshire Natural History Society. The name was changed to the Hertfordshire Geology Society (A section of Hertfordshire Natural History Society & Field Club) in 1984 and in 2003 the Hertfordshire Geological Society became an independent organisation. In 2012 the Hertfordshire RIGS Group became associated with the Society.

The HGS became a Local Group of the Geologists’ Association in 2013, after being an Affiliate since 1991.
